BirthBox was created in response to global infant mortality rates. Across the developing world, but especially so in Sub-Saharan Africa, children are dying of predominantly preventable and treatable causes. UNICEF predicts 7.6 million children under the age of five will die this year with an additional 200 million surviving “without the ability to reach their full human potential.” Disease is often caused by a lack of access to safe drinking water and unsanitary sleep conditions – with whole families often sharing a ground sleep space with small livestock.

We created The BirthBox™ Sleep System to provide a safe and sanitary sleeping environment for baby.

Babies up until the age of three months can safely sleep inside The BirthBox™ Sleep System care-package, with an adult present, keeping the baby removed from the unsanitary conditions often found on ground sleep spaces.

In addition to the ability to sleep inside the care-package, The BirthBox™ Sleep System is provided to attendees containing useful tools to partner with our educational campaigns. Products included range from menstrual cups, which can be safely sanitized and reused between cycles, to stainless steel cups, which can be used to safely store unrefrigerated, hand expressed breastmilk for up to 8 hours. Even newborn babies can learn to cup feed while bonding and receiving nutrition from a father, older sibling or extended family member giving the new mother time to rest and recover.

The safer sleep environment and tools offered within The BirthBox™ Sleep System in conjunction with the Safer Birth, Family Planning and Family Bonding educational campaigns, offered through The Toolkit, work together to lower infant mortality rates through community engagement and women’s empowerment. At BirthBox we believe we can stand for strong families, inspired children and a healthier tomorrow by intervening when they are most vulnerable today.
